What is Teletherapy?
Teletherapy involves the use of interactive technologies allowing the client and therapist to share information remotely to achieve the same goals as in-person therapy. Staff at SBH have completed formal training in teletherapy, and utilize Telehealth by Simple Practice for encrypted video and audio transmission that complies with HIPAA standards for privacy. This service is available to California residents only. Pros and cons of teletherapy include:
- Increased access to care and convenience
- Researchers have shown teletherapy effective for many situations
- Same ethical and legal principles apply
- Same cost as in-person therapy
- Most insurance companies offer reimbursement (check yours for details)
- Some aspects of therapy may not be as effective using technologies
- Additional risks of using technologies
- Additional policies and consent form
To Participate in Teletherapy
In order to utilize teletherapy, you must meet the following requirements:
- Able to send and receive video
- No software required for computers
- Free app for Telehealth by SimplePractice needed for phone/tablet
- Able to send and receive audio (headphones recommended)
- Connection speed - 25 Mbps minimum (40 Mbps recommended)
- Private area with adequate lighting to see you
- Able to send and receive documents electronically
- California resident located in California
- Case appropriate for teletherapy
- Complete same intake evaluation process as in-person therapy
- Can request tele-therapy when completing intake form
